All About Titanium | Xometry

Titanium was first discovered as a mineral inclusion in in Cornwall, South West England, by a clergyman, geologist, and chemist called William Gregor. While out by a stream, Gregor found some black sand that was being pulled by a magnet. Upon closer inspection, he found iron oxide, and another whiter metal oxide that he didn’t recognize. He named the metal “manaccanite” and reported his discovery in French and German science journals.

He wasn’t the only one to stumble across this valuable metal and wonder what it was; Franz-Joseph Müller von Reichenstein, a mineralogist and mining engineer in Austria, was in a similar predicament. In , a Prussian chemist, Martin Heinrich Klaproth, also happened upon this super strong element. He was the one who named it “titanium” — after the Titans of Greek mythology. It would take another 115 years until anyone managed to get pure titanium out. 

In , Matthew A. Hunter, a scientist from New Zealand working at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, isolated it by heating titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) with sodium at high pressure and temperature (–°F). The result was pure titanium, and sodium chloride as a byproduct. 

Then, in , William Justin Kroll, a metallurgist from Luxembourg, found another way to isolate titanium, this time by reducing TiCl4 through fractional distillation with calcium, and later with magnesium and sodium. In the s, the Soviet Union started using titanium for its military applications, including aviation and submarines, and it wasn’t long before the USA and other countries hopped on the titanium bandwagon.

Can anybody recommend a good vendor for titanium sheet metal for MYOG projects? I haven’t had a ton of luck on ebay, and Dutch is out of stock. The obvious choice used to be Ti Goat, but it is unclear to me if they are still doing business (understandably so) on account of DJ’s unfortunate passing.

Most of them are retailing stuff from a metals supplier, so they are going to be 50% – 100% more expensive. However, if you only want a little bit, that might be below the minimum order quantity for a metals supplier.

Right now ebay seems to be ‘not an option’ due to the total collapse of the air freight system. It used to travel on the passenger flights, which have stopped.

There are many vendors on AliExpress. Last year, I bought a 0.1x100x500mm piece for $2.75. Vendor was MSL Tool Store. Cost seems to jump up significantly for 200mm wide pieces. May have something to do with the dimensions of the shipping package.

Shipping is slow, though, typically 5 weeks. Even slower now, but orders with various vendors  that I placed in late March are now trickling in.

Was rolled up but easy to flatten out. I use it as a 6 1/2 inch diameter windshield that goes 3/4 of the way around my larger diameter pot. It hangs on the pot supports of my MSR Pocket Rocket with hooks I made form 3 paper clips. It extends about 1 1/2 inches below the level of the pot supports, so doesn’t surround the canister.
