Understanding Different Industrial Hose Types

Let's get started by discussing some background on different hose types. Hose is distinctly different from tubing. Hose is constructed with multiple layers, whereas tubing consists of a single layer of material, be it stainless steel tubing or PFA tubing. Therefore, hoses are inherently multi-layered systems.
The core material is significant as it comes into direct contact with the media flowing through the hose. Additional layers serve either protective or pressure containment purposes, including components such as braids, reinforcements, and covers.
A silicone cover, for instance, can be added to a hose to enhance abrasion resistance and to make the exterior easier to clean. Connections are then made; for softer core materials like PTFE or Teflon, the hose can be crimped or squeezed. In contrast, metal hoses typically require welding to secure connections, influencing the hose's performance characteristics.
Different Hose Core Materials
Understanding each layer of the hose is crucial for selecting the right hose for the appropriate application. Here are some common core materials:
- Metal Core: This core consists of convoluted metal, allowing for flexibility. A straight core would not bend, leading to quicker breakage. The convoluted design lets it function as a highly flexible metal hose.
- Fluoropolymer or PTFE Core: This core has a crimped tank connection, but it does not withstand much pressure on its own. Therefore, it requires braiding (similar to metal hoses) to provide pressure containment.
- Thermoplastic Hose: Designed for hydraulic pressure applications, this hose can tolerate significant abuse and pressure spikes.
- Rubber Hose: A more basic option, rubber hoses are cost-effective and can endure substantial use, though they are not well-suited for high-tech applications.
Using an inappropriate hose for an application significantly affects its lifespan. This is a common misconception. The correct hose can drastically extend service life.
Each hose type has its strengths and weaknesses. For example, while metal cores endure temperature fluctuations and limit permeation, they can bend like a paperclip, leading to faster breakage compared to other hose types. Thus, it remains essential to choose the right hose for the intended application.
